How to Make Discord Colored Text (2026 Guide)
Discord has no color picker. Discord colored text only works inside a fenced code block: three backticks, a language tag glued to that opening fence, your line, then three backticks to close. A generator can paste an ansi block if you want more hues. Regular markdown will not paint a letter. **this** stays the default chat color.
If you searched discord text color, you are looking at the same workaround. There is no slider in User Settings.
How do I send a colored Discord message in 60 seconds?
The fence always looks like this. Paste it into a DM with yourself before you debug in #general.
```diff
- raid cancelled
```
diff sits on the same line as the opening backticks. Put the word diff on the next line and Discord treats it as content. You get a gray box with diff staring at you, and no red.
What do I type on the desktop app?
Click the message box in a channel, a thread, or a DM. Type three backticks, then diff immediately — no extra line. Hit Shift+Enter so Discord does not send a half-written fence. Type - raid cancelled with the hyphen as the first character on that line. Shift+Enter again, three closing backticks, then Enter to send.
On US QWERTY the backtick shares a key with ~, left of 1. If you pasted the fence from Google Docs, you may have curly quotes instead of backticks, and the block will never parse. Type the ticks in Discord.
What do I tap on iPhone or Android?
The phone composer uses a send arrow. Return is a newline, so you will not accidentally fire ```diff into the channel the way desktop Enter does.
On iOS, long-press the apostrophe key until the backtick popover appears, tap it three times, type diff, Return, type the hyphen line, Return, three more backticks, then the arrow.
On Android with Gboard, open the symbols page (?123, then often =\<). The backtick hides there. Same fence as desktop. A single pair of backticks is inline code, which has no language tag and cannot color anything.
Which language tags still color Discord text?
These five still highlight on desktop Discord. Older screenshot tricks like brainfuck are unreliable now. If a tag below renders white, that client dropped the grammar — try diff or yaml.
How do I get red or green?
diff. A leading - paints red (red text, or white text on a red wash, depending on theme). A leading + paints green.
```diff
- pull cancelled
+ raid is Saturday 9pm EST
```
The symbol has to be the first character on the line. A space before the hyphen ( - later) leaves the line uncolored.
How do I get yellow?
fix. No extra symbols. The highlighter paints the whole block yellow-olive.
```fix
loot is mandatory on this boss
```
How do I get cyan?
yaml. Leave the words unquoted on their own line.
```yaml
queue pops in 2 min
```
Quoted yaml often flips to another color. Skip the quotes if you wanted cyan.
How do I get blue?
ini, with the line in square brackets, the same shape as an INI section header.
```ini
[voice in 5]
```
Drop the brackets and ini is mostly default white.
Why does the css trick need brackets too?
Same brackets, different highlighter. On Discord's default dark theme, [this line] inside css usually lands yellow-orange, not the blue you get from ini. Light theme can shift the hue. If your css block is white, the brackets are missing.
```css
[bring pots]
```
People who type colored text discord into Google often land on ansi generators. Those work because Discord reads terminal escape sequences inside an ansi fence, and you cannot type the escape character (U+001B) from a normal keyboard. Paste straight into Discord. Park the copy in Apple Notes first and you will send gray text with [0;31m sitting in the box. ansi still fails on a lot of phone builds, so treat it as a desktop and web look.
Why isn't my colored text working on mobile?
You did this on iPhone: long-press the apostrophe, type ```diff, Return, - pull cancelled, close the fence, tap Send. You see a gray monospace box. Your raid lead on the Windows desktop app sees red.
That is not you mistyping the hyphen. Discord's iOS and Android apps have historically skipped highlight.js colors even when the fence is valid. Some newer builds paint them; plenty still do not. There is no toggle for it in app settings. Open the same DM on discord.com or the desktop app. If color shows there, leave the message — there is no workaround that turns mobile into desktop highlighting.
Why did Discord print my backticks as plain text?
The usual miss is using one backtick on each side because that is how inline code works. You type `diff -pull cancelled`, send, and Discord shows a gray chip with diff still readable. Color needs a fenced block: three ticks, language on that same opening line, content, three ticks to close.
The other version: you copied a working colored block from #general — Discord's copy often grabs the inner text and drops the fence — and pasted it into #announcements, or a channel where AutoMod (or a bot) strips code blocks. The channel shows:
diff
- pull cancelled
as ordinary chat. Re-type the opening fence in that channel. If it keeps dying, check Server Settings → AutoMod, or the bot dashboard, for a rule that blocks markdown or code fences.
Can I color a nickname, channel, or server name?
No. Highlighting only runs in the message box: chat, DMs, threads, forum posts. Display names, nicknames, channel names, role names, and the server name store backticks as characters. Your discord colored messages always live inside a code box. They never look like a red word in a normal sentence, and they never recolor an @mention.
You also cannot nest discord bold or discord italic inside the colored block. The fence freezes markdown, so **go** inside fix prints the stars. Mentions inside the block usually will not ping.
Why doesn't Discord just give me a color picker?
Discord already ships a highlighter so people can paste logs. A real color picker would be a new chat format every client has to draw, that fake "FREE NITRO" scams would paint red on purpose, and that still has to read if you cannot see hue. They never productized it. We are borrowing a developer feature.
I only wanted italic or bold — do I still need a code block?
If the dark box is too loud, you wanted discord text formatting, not color. **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, and ~~strike~~ render as normal chat. They do not sit in a terminal.
Markdown italic still dies in a nickname. If you need slanted letters that paste into a display name, a free italic text generator for Discord is the unicode route — same copy-paste as cute fonts, not a code fence.
FAQ
Does this work on the iPhone or Android app?
The fence is the same, but iOS and Android often draw a gray box. Check the same message on desktop.
Can I color my Discord nickname or a channel name?
No. Those fields store backticks as characters. Color only runs in the message box.
Why do I see backticks instead of color?
One backtick on each side is inline code. You need a triple-backtick fence with the language on the opening line.
Color in Discord is a tagged code block, not a font setting. Send one fix line to yourself on desktop. If a channel ate yours, say what you were posting — raid ping, announcement, bot dump — and which client you had open.
